How many reported rapes occurred in the last 12 months?
The statistics are horrendous. And these are only the officially reported cases.
In March of 2022, the highest ever number of rapes was recorded by police:
70,330 cases of rape in the last 12 months.
With only 1 in 6 cases being actually reported, that statistic is likely upwards of 420,000+ rapes in the last 12 months.
The that same period of time, just 2,223 charges were brought about.
In 2021, only 1 in 100 rapes were recorded by police that resulted in a charge within the same yet. Never mind conviction of these attackers.
Even with rapidly rising cases of rapes and a rise in reports, charging and conviction rates remain at a terribly low record.
How many survivors of rape report it to the police?
5 in 6 women who are raped don't report it to the police. That's 83% of women who are raped, don't report it.
4 in 5 men who are raped don't report it to the police. 80% of men who are raped, don't report it.
Why do rape survivors not report it?
While many rape survivors may confide in family or friends, here's why they said they don't report it to the police:
- 40% – 'embarrassment'
- 38% – 'don't think the police could help'
- 34% – 'thought it would be humiliating'
How many young girls in schools are impacted?
- 9 in 10 girls have experienced sexist name-calling or been sent unwanted images of a sexual nature
